“We Express Regret Over HYBE’s Damages Lawsuit Against Fans; Clarify Your Official Position on NewJeans as All Five Members First”
Chosun Ilbo (reporter Lee Ga-young) exclusively reported on December 15 that BELIFT LAB filed a 100 million won damages lawsuit against ‘Team Bunnies,’ a NewJeans fan group, on the 11th. The case has not even been assigned to a court division yet, raising suspicions that information was leaked by HYBE. Following this report, dozens of media outlets quoted and reported the same content. Chosun Ilbo (reporter Lee Ga-young) also published an article on November 20 with the headline “NewJeans Fandom Launches Fax Campaign to Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism—What Is Their True Identity?” raising suspicions about the fandom’s identity.
This is a claim that lacks understanding of how K-pop fandoms operate. When issues arise, K-pop fandoms spontaneously form as different entities and take action to express their opinions to agencies. This statement of protest, the truck protests yesterday and today, the fax campaign to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and last year’s National Assembly audit fax campaign were all led by different fans. For HYBE, which cannot be unaware of this, to file lawsuits by shifting responsibility to specific individuals and wage a media war is essentially an attempt to pressure and intimidate the NewJeans fandom.
We express deep regret that HYBE has been delaying the official announcement of NewJeans’ return as a complete group for over a month, and instead of reassuring worried and concerned NewJeans fans, is filing numerous civil and criminal lawsuits against fans. We urge HYBE to clearly state its official position on NewJeans—Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein—as all five members, and to fulfill its duty to protect its affiliated artists first.
